About Jefferson Coin

Jefferson Coin's About Us page is perfect for telling the story of a family-owned coin shop. The business opened in 1962 and evolved over time, eventually turning into the Jefferson Coin of today.

This is clearly a family business - there are plenty of family pictures on the website - and it adheres well to the overall positioning and marketing of the firm.

This family history gives you the impression that gold and silver are in the family's blood, and while there isn't anything said about the educational qualifications of the family, it is clear that they care about precious metals and understand the market.

Jefferson Coin Review - Website

Other sections of the website enhance the sense of trust that the About Us page builds. There is an extensive FAQ page that answers relatively common questions, helping people who are buying from the website know what they are doing a bit more. Other pages lay out additional details, including the cost of shipping, shipping information, and "Trust and Safety."

That last page lays out the company's privacy party and what they do with your information. Most people won't actually read all of this information, but it is nice to see it made available for people who may be interested.

Services Offered

The main part of the website, of course, is in the shopping section. Individuals can click on the "shop" button and begin to see what is actually available for purchase. Unlike other pages, all shopping products available are listed on one page. However, you can sort the products by the type of bullion or coins.

Bullion listed includes gold, gold eagles, silver, and holiday rounds. Clicking on one of the coins reveals information about the coin that you clicked on, including weight, fineness, minted, and a bit of information about the design.

Jefferson Coin Review - producrts

It isn't the most in-depth amount of information that we've ever seen, but it certainly fills in the basic information that you may need before making a coin purchase. Fortunately, there is an easy "add to cart" button to use, and you can check out just like any other website.

Furthermore, Jefferson Coin has a nice array of coins that you can buy. We'd categorize this inventory as relatively solid. It's not the most amount of coins we've ever seen, but it is a relatively solid amount.

Things start to get interesting when you consider the other supplies and forms of currency that you can buy off of the website. This includes Paper Money, which is broken down into four categories: Large notes, Small notes, Confederate notes, and Obsolete notes.

However, as of the time of this writing, clicking on this section of the website gets an error message: "It seems we can't find what you are looking for." It is unclear if Jefferson Coin is out of stock or if they no longer carry this currency. Jefferson Coin also sells a limited amount of supplies, including gloves and coin folders.

Free Shipping

Finally, there is a section for "free shipping." This includes a few items that are apparently shipped for free. However, weirdly enough, there is an item where you can join the "wait list" that allows you to get free shipping by simply adding your email address.

The company does charge a nominal amount for shipping, which is interesting, as other companies will ship for free if you order above as little as $100. Jefferson Coin will only ship for free if you order above $5,000 - an amount that is out of reach for most investors.

One key item is missing from this website: A precious metal IRA. Indeed, the concept isn't so much as mentioned anywhere on the website. This isn't necessarily a bad thing, but if you are looking to set up an IRA from Jefferson Coin, you will have to look elsewhere.

However, information on the website - like the purity of the coins - is adequate to determine if the coins you are interested in would qualify for an IRA. This means that you should be able to buy coins from Jefferson Coin and have them shipped to a third-party custodian for IRA purposes - provided that you are SURE that the coins meet IRS regulations.

Finally, you can sell to Jefferson Coin, and a nice page on the website lays out exactly how this can be done. It appears as if you can sell to the company regardless of where you got the precious metals from, and the company website lays out exactly what you have to do.

By using their Live Price Board, you can make a rough determination of how much the company's offer will be. However, this Live Price Board creates new problems: Clicking on it reveals a website that is either down or hasn't been set up yet. This, unfortunately, is a bit of a recurring problem for the company.

Resources Provided

The educational resources provided by Jefferson Coin can best be described as "okay."

They have charts that enable you to see the price movement of various precious metals. They also have a blog that reviews various pieces of precious metals and discusses inventory.

Jefferson Coin Review - Resources Provided

However, the blog has barely been updated, with content created three times in 2023. Fortunately, two of those blog entries are from this month, and one is from only two days ago, at least implying that more content is coming.

However, the lack of content here is hugely problematic - besides the chart and a sparsely-updated blog, there are no other resources, and users have no way of becoming more educated on what the precious metal process is.

Website Content & Messaging

The website can best be described as stripped-down and with no frills. This is not a bad thing! Unlike other websites, it is not overloaded with content. It is easy to find what you are looking for and simple to navigate. It loads fast, and its mobile website is as easy to access as the regular site. Furthermore, if you want to jump right into shopping, all you have to do is scroll down the main page.

Other Reviews

As always, we scoured the internet to see what other reviews we could find about Jefferson Coin. The results, though limited, were positive. The company earned 4.6 out of 5 stars on Google (39 reviews) and five stars on Yelp (6 reviews only).

Individuals discussed the extreme friendliness of the staff and the speed of online shipping, with other individuals noting that they never had anything but a good experience at the shop. The staff was noted to be knowledgeable and easy to work with, and this appeared to be the case regardless of if the purchaser was online, over the phone, or in person.

Our Rating

Advantages

There are certainly many positives about Jefferson Coin. Its website is solid, easy to navigate, and can allow users to make purchases from them.

The inventory - though not the largest we have ever seen - is robust enough to ensure that individuals making purchases will have a good array of options. Finally, the reviews we found - though limited - were positive.

Disadvantages

Jefferson Coin gives off a small business, family feels - but in ways that aren't necessarily a good thing. They don't have quite a few services offered by other websites, including an IRA. The amount of educational materials they have is lacking compared to other websites.

Most concerning is that some of their pages - including pages that they reference in other sections of their website - are simply down and not working. If you are looking for a reliable partner in your precious metal purchases, you may be challenged.

Final Verdict

Jefferson Coin is a solid company - one that clearly has branded itself as a small, friendly business. That is both a good thing and a bad thing. On the one hand, the website works well for its purposes, coins are available, and it appears to be an honest company.

However, challenges remain as you go deeper: Some website pages aren't set up, there are almost non-existent resources, and the inventory isn't nearly as robust as others.

Where does that leave you? If you find something you are interested in purchasing on the company's limited inventory, you should buy it without fear. Otherwise, you may be more hard-pressed to use Jefferson Coin to find what you are looking for.
