About Liberty Coin Service

Liberty Coin Service is located in Lansing, Michigan, and has been in business since 1971. The front page of their website immediately launches into an in-depth explainer about who the company is, what its competitive advantage is, and why you should buy from them.

Interestingly enough, it also has a multi-party mission statement: To help buyers find the best coins that they are looking for, regardless of if those reasons are investing, collecting, or to ensure that you get the rarest coin.

An About Us page gives even more information, including the company's shipping, refund, and selling policies. While there is no information about the qualifications of the staff or the history of the business, it is clear from their home page that they care about their customers, have been around for some time, and want to help individuals find what they are looking for.

Liberty Coin leans heavily into the field of Numismatics. This is the field of collecting coins, currency, or other precious metals. It is referenced repeatedly on their website and in articles that they share. We've seen this field referenced on other web pages but never quite as heavily as on this page.

That's not a bad thing - it is just a bit more of an obtuse way of referring to who they are and what they do. As part of that orientation, Liberty Coin is also part of numerous fields related to Numismatics. They list membership in at least five groups on their webpage.

It is good to know that the company cares enough about its field that they are willing to spend time and money to join groups like this. Interestingly enough, Liberty also has a Magic The Gathering side business, in which they sell Magic cars and host Magic events.

Services Offered

Liberty Coin has an extremely robust range of coins for sale. Indeed, if you are interested in buying coins, you've come to the right place: There are many types of currency you can buy, including cents, nickels, world coins, ancient coins, and more.

Clicking on any coin reveals its price, but that is about it. This is unfortunate: We've seen more information on other websites about the coins that you are buying.

That's not it for items you can buy. Also listed are various forms of currency and four different types of bullion. More information is listed about many of the bullion types than other forms of currency that you can buy off of Liberty.

Resources

Everything about the Liberty Coin website gives off a small business feel. This is not a bad thing - indeed, in many cases, it is a clear advantage over other businesses, albeit with some challenges (like a lack of information displayed about certain coins).

However, the learning center is EXTREMELY robust. It lists a huge variety of information, including a variety of How To articles on the subject. Many of these links go directly to longer papers that lay out, in great detail, how to complete certain aspects of a coin collection.

The greatest challenge about this section is that it is disorganized. The articles are formatted strangely and aren't even grouped together. The content, however, is first-rate - and that makes the lack of organization in this section more challenging.

There is also a news section, but this section is a bit more challenging. It lists a series of articles, but it appears that the most recent one was updated in 2020 - at least, the most recent one that we could find.

The challenge, quite simply, is that the articles aren't sorted by date. It looks immature, and it makes it more challenging for readers to keep up-to-date about what is happening in the precious metal world.

Website Design & Other Content

The website works fine if a little dated. The design is clearly older, and the colors are a bit drab, but you can still easily navigate through and find everything that you are looking for. The mobile website works well, and it is as easy to navigate as the main website.

Liberty Coin Service also runs an active Facebook page. This page shares information about news articles that are relevant to precious metals, coins, and Numismatics.

They also have a YouTube page, although that YouTube page is exclusively related to their Magic The Gathering content.

It is worth noting that you can make purchases directly off of the website, just like you can for any other eCommerce website. This makes it easy to find a product and immediately purchase it.

It is also worth noting that Liberty Coin relies exclusively on information - not sales language or celebrity endorsements - to sell its product. There is nothing flashy - it is all about simply investing for value or recreation.

Interestingly, the conservative bent of Liberty Coin DOES come out in their social media, where they rail against lies from the Mainstream Media and horrible jobs report numbers. This is somewhat of a constant within the precious metal world and almost something to be expected at this point.

Customer Reviews

Hundreds of customers have reviewed Liberty Coin Service on a variety o review websites. By and large, these reviews are positive. They include:

  • Google Reviews: 4.1 out of 5 stars, 201 reviews
  • Trust Pilot: 3.7 out of 5 stars, 27 reviews
  • Birdeye: 4.7 out of 5 stars, 206 reviews

In many cases, specific staffers were highlighted and praised as being helpful to individuals who were looking for coins - always a good sign! However, in many of the Google reviews, prices were noted as not being the greatest - something that is unquestionably worth keeping in mind for the future.

Our Rating

Advantages

There are many positives to doing business with Liberty Coin. The reviews lay out what appears to be the truth behind the company: They are friendly, helpful, and service-oriented. They have an excellent inventory and clear transparency behind the services that they offer.

When it comes to navigating through their website, it is relatively easy to find the types of currency that you are looking for. They also have a regularly updated social media feed and a newsletter, two forms of communication users can use to track information.

Disadvantages

The small business feel of this website becomes more and more problematic the longer you stay on it. Information is haphazardly organized, dated, and difficult to find. This cancels out the many benefits of the website, including the excellent content and vast inventory.

It looks as if someone needs to simply prune the website and refresh it - if that were to be done, it would go a long way toward addressing some of the challenges on the website.

While the page does a good job of laying out information about who they are and why you should do business with them, some of this information can be a bit disheartening. For example, they only offer free shipping if you buy more than $5,000 in products. Some businesses have much lower shipping rates.

Furthermore, while their inventory is impressive, they don't have as complete of a level of services as other websites we have reviewed. For example, they offer no retirement investing services and don't even mention IRAs.

Individuals who are interested in IRAs can certainly make purchases and have those purchases shipped to a third-party vendor, but you have to know whether or not the gold you are interested in purchasing meets related IRS standards.

Final Verdict

There are a lot of reasons to do business with Liberty Coin: Its vast inventory, friendly staff, and an impressive array of coins, bullion, and paper. The company is knowledgeable and more than qualified to handle your needs.

On the other hand, their website is dated, their information is disorganized, and the small-business feel of the website bellies some real challenges in doing business with this company. The fact that numerous customers in reviews noted that their prices were unfair is also a giant red flag.

Our final verdict is a mixed one. Beginners who don't know anything about buying or selling precious metals may want to look elsewhere, as it appears to be too easy to make a purchase they will be unsatisfied with. Individuals who are a bit more knowledgeable will likely have a better time and an easier experience.
